Manchester United were poor against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday and could have no complaints when Chris Brunt put the away side ahead.
However, Louis van Gaal’s side were given a lifeline when Saido Berahino was adjudged to have handled the ball inside West Brom’s area late on.
Robin van Persie stepped up to take the penalty but his effort was saved by Boaz Myhill.
As it panned out, the missed opportunity proved to be pivotal as West Brom held on to secure a 1-0 win.
Having missed his previous penalty against Liverpool earlier this season, Wayne Rooney elected to leave Saturday’s spot-kick to van Persie.
If Rooney had been more confident in himself, he may have scored the penalty and fans would be looking at a completely different result.
The episode will give Louis van Gaal food for thought as United head into the final few fixtures of the campaign.
