Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed Ilkay Gundogan informed has asked to leave this summer.
The future of the 24-year-old midfielder beyond this year at Dortmund was placed in doubt after the German club admitted he would not renew his contract.
Reports have continued since which say Gundogan will join Manchester United and that transfer has been given further legs following the latest comments from Zorc which confirm he has no desire to remain at Dortmund.
“He told us that he wants to leave this summer,” Zorc confirmed.
Considered a potential replacement for Carrick, Gundogan has long been linked with a move to Man United dating back to his pre-injury form which made him one of the best central midfielders in world football.
Dortmund have now been put in a very difficult position which gives United great room to negotiate a deal.
It is now common knowledge that Gundogan both wants to leave and won’t sign a contract renewal, so Dortmund have to sell the midfielder this summer if they want to cash in on his exit.
Gundogan’s story has developed massively over the space of just a few weeks and everything is now set in place for a club to come in with an offer that matches Dortmund’s demands. Once that is in place and Gundogan agrees, a transfer can happen.
