Wolfsburg’s sport director Klaus Allofs has completely denied the club has any interest in signing Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan.
Reports from Germany suggested Wolfsburg had joined the race for Gundogan following confirmation from the German club that he would be leaving this summer.
With Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich all separately linked with Gundogan, having another interested party would make it more difficult for Louis van Gaal to negotiate.
However, Allofs has denied all rumours and labelled them as inventions.
“To link us with him is purely invented,” Allofs said on Tuesday.
Although Bayern have been linked with him, it’s very unlikely Dortmund would sell to their domestic rival when given the choice, meaning a move abroad and not to a rival is far more likely. They couldn’t stop Robert Lewandowski joining Bayern on a free transfer or Mario Gotze thanks to a release clause but with Gundogan they’d have a choice.
If Louis van Gaal is keen to sign Gundogan, the tough competition for Dortmund will more than likely be from Arsenal this summer.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the Gundogan story develops over the next few weeks because it was less than a couple of weeks ago when German reports were completely convinced he was joining United.
