Brendan Rodgers has insisted Liverpool were never interested in signing Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven because he was happy with the wingers in his current squad.
An agreement for Memphis Depay to join Manchester United was announced yesterday despite strong interest from other clubs including Liverpool.
“It wasn’t something we were ever interested in,” Rodgers claimed.
“We already have four wingers at the club and have other priorities.
“He’s obviously a very talented young player but we have Raheem Sterling, Jordan Ibe, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic in those positions. We’re well covered, especially on the left-hand side.”
Rodgers’ denial comes less than 24 hours after PSV’s technical director Marcel Brands confirmed Liverpool had approached them over signing Depay and simply lost out as the winger chose Man United.
Liverpool were in for Depay but unfortunately for them, they never stood a chance up against Louis van Gaal because of his previous relationship for the Dutchman.
However, if you believe what Rodgers said, Liverpool never had any interest in signing him, in spite of the fact they contacted PSV over a transfer. Good one, Brendan.
