Memphis Depay has explained to Dutch television that his affiliation with Manchester United runs deeper than simply now being a player for the club.
The 21-year-old will become Louis van Gaal‘s first signing of the upcoming transfer window after he ratifies his move upon completion of his medical.
Already Depay has spoken extremely highly of his relationship with Van Gaal and insisted it was a ‘dream move’ for him.
Now, the Dutchman has insisted his affection for United stems back to when he was just a young boy.
“[When] I see myself playing in Manchester [and think about] the club, the stadium, the supporters, the competition, it’s a strong feeling,” he said.
“I said to myself – when I was 12 years old, I think – ‘I want to play there.’ It’s a dream come true.”
Depay was 12 back in 2006 and if that was the year he fell in love with the club, you could understand why.
Cristiano Ronaldo was turning into a superstar, Wayne Rooney was electric alongside him and Man United stomped to the Premier League title. Only an extra time Didier Drogba goal stopped them winning the double.
As for memorable moments, there were plenty including the unbelievable 7-1 demolition of AS Roma in one of Old Trafford’s finest Champions League nights.
Depay will be blown away by the scale of United when he joins this summer but from everything he has said beforehand, he can certainly talk the talk and genuinely seems thrilled to have made the move.
