Memphis Depay is intent on becoming one of the best players in the world and has told Manchester United fans to expect a lot from his free-kicks.
The 21-year-old scored his seventh free-kick of the season at the weekend and nobody in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more goals than him from set pieces.
Comparisons with the likes of Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo have already happened for the youngster but he is not phased by them at all.
Instead, he is keen to live up to expectations and develop into a world class player.
“I train every day on free kicks,” the winger told De Telegraaf.
“The Manchester United fans can expect something from me in that area. If I get the chance to take free kicks then I will shoot it.”
When asked about comparison with the world’s best, Depay added: “I know that people talk about me,” he added.
“I believe in myself and I hope I will be able to reach that level.
“I will fight for it and will do my best in every training session to get better. I hope to become one of the big boys in the world, but there is still a lot needed. Now I must go and make the first step [at United].”
His powerful, straight free-kick which he scored at the weekend was very similar in technique to that of Ronaldo and his pacey, powerful style of play also draws similarities, so you can see where the comparisons have been made.
When Ronaldo arrived as a spotty teenager, it took him a few years to develop but Depay is joining United at 21, so is three years ahead of him in his career.
Having lit up the Eredivisie last year, Memphis arrives with a fantastic goalscoring reputation already but he looks every inch ready to take up that mantle and prove he can meet expectations of him.
