Valencia sporting director Francisco Rufete has insisted Nicolas Otamendi will be going nowhere despite rumoured interest from Manchester United.
Otamendi was reportedly close to joining Man United in the winter transfer window but a transfer collapsed late on.
Louis van Gaal has not been deterred by the episode and is said to be keen on going back in for the Argentine in the summer.
However, Rufete dismissed suggestions Otamendi could leave the club and instead claimed Valencia will attempt to extend his contract.
Speaking about the situation, Rufete said: “We are very clear about Otamendi. We want him to play for us for a long time to come. Nico knows that and so far he’s not come to me to say he wants to speak about things being different from that.
“As soon as the season is over we’ll be talking to him about staying for longer.”
United are undoubtedly in need of defensive reinforcements and Otamendi would provide a real injection of quality at the back.
However, the 27-year-old’s €50m buy-out clause may prove to be too much for United. The club have money to spend but they will not want to pay over the odds for a player. United have been heavily linked with moves for Mats Hummels and Aymeric Laporte and they would represent more value for money in the long-term.
