Gianluigi Buffon mocks Manchester United over Paul Pogba

by Ben Topliss

Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon believes Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United made a mistake in letting Paul Pogba leave the club.

Pogba joined Man United as a young player in 2009 but eventually left for Juventus three years later after becoming frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

The Frenchman has flourished since joining the Italian giants and is now widely considered to be one of the best midfielders in the world.

Buffon insisted United and Ferguson should have done a lot more to keep Pogba at the club.

Speaking about Pogba, Buffon said: ”I have been in football many years, but the decision of Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United to not play Pogba and let him leave is one of the strangest decisions I have ever seen.

“Just after a few training sessions we saw how good he was, it cannot have been the same player they saw in Manchester – we thought they may be needed glasses.

“I have never seen a player who is so good at his age, he is so strong, so technically gifted, has exceptional all-round play.

“Pogba can do things only Pogba can, similar to Messi and Ronaldo. United let one of the top players in the world leave, but that has only been good news for us.”

Ferguson knew how much potential Pogba had but wasn’t prepared to give him the money that he was asking for so early on in his career.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 but it was an understandable decision at the time and one that was not without precedent. Players such as Carlos Tevez and Gabriel Heinze also had attitude problems at United before being moved on.
