The 21-year-old will be direct competition for Mata in terms of a spot in Louis van Gaal‘s starting XI because the Spanish midfielder has been in fantastic form for the club since being used as a right-winger.
Despite the fact Depay’s signing means Mata’s place in the team is under threat, the Spanish midfielder has welcomed him with open arms and believes he has a great future ahead of him.
“I am happy about his signing,” Mata said.
“I think he eventually is more of a winger than me. I am sure he can to help us.”
“He is a young player with a great future ahead and I hope he will make a great contribution here. This club always try to sign the best players in the market.”
With United now looking likely to qualify for Champions League football once again, strength in numbers is needed with the added matches and it will be interesting to see how Louis van Gaal decides to rotate his squad.
