Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness believes there is a “real chance” that Real Madrid midfielder Gareth Bale will return to the Premier League this summer.
Bale left Tottenham Hotspur to join Madrid in 2013 and helped them win the Champions League in his debut season.
However, he has endured a difficult term this time around and there have been rumours that Manchester United are preparing a big money move for him at the end of the season.
Souness insisted Bale’s confidence is shot and that he may be forced out by unhappy fans.
Speaking about the situation, Souness said: “Bale was as responsible as anybody for Real Madrid winning the European Cup last season, but he’s had an indifferent time of it this year and they are now talking about sending him home.
“I think there’s a real chance that could happen and he could be back in the Premier League next year because the Real Madrid fans are not entirely happy with him this season.
“I don’t subscribe to the argument that the other players aren’t passing to him enough. To me, he doesn’t come across as the most confident boy in the world.
“That was my doubt about him going there. If you’re at a big club you’ve got to have a strong personality to survive and I think he is finding life difficult both on the pitch and in the dressing room right now.”
Bale is a fantastic player who is simply going through a bad run of form. He is too good not to turn things around.
In any case, it is unlikely that Madrid will let him go having made him the world’s most expensive player. Any transfer would require a monumental effort from both parties and it would likely be too much hassle for what it’s worth.
