Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has promised to shake Luis Suarez’s hand when the two players meet in the Champions League final but insisted he will make sure the Uruguayan striker “feels” him on the pitch.
Evra helped Juventus seal their progression into the final against Suarez’s Barcelona thanks to a 1-1 second-leg draw against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Suarez, then at Liverpool, was fined £40,000 and banned for eight matches in 2011 when he was found guilty of racially abusing Evra, then at Man United, during a match.
Evra insisted he will be happy to shake Suarez’s hand despite the controversial history between the pair.
When asked about their impending reunion, Evra said: ”A lot of people ask me this question. It doesn’t matter. The most important thing is I play the final, you know.
“I am proud to be what I am, I am proud about my colour and I will shake his hand, it is no problem. But I will make sure he will feel me on the pitch.”
What Suarez did was absolutely abhorrent and it is a testament to Evra’s character that he is willing to maintain his professionalism.
It is fair to say that the large majority of United supporters will be hoping for a Juventus win so the Frenchman can lift the famous trophy once again. Evra enjoyed a long and successful career at United and fully deserves all the praise that is coming his way.
