The United boss also revealed Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria are both fit to play, so that’s two players in and two players out of his available squad.
Shaw had to be taken off against Crystal Palace last weekend after suffering an elbow to his face and hasn’t been able to recover.
As for Rooney, he pulled up with what looked like a muscular injury and Van Gaal has decided not to risk him in what is likely to be a fast paced game on Sunday.
Di Maria’s return to action could see him back in the starting XI for the first time in quite a while and the Argentinian will be desperate to end the season on a high having suffered so many injuries along the way.
Playing against his former club will always be an important game for Van Persie but he’ll need to put in a vastly improved performance in comparison to how he has played so far this season if he is going to get on the score sheet.
