Louis van Gaal says David de Gea’s decision is now up to him

by Sam Peoples

Louis van Gaal has made it clear Manchester United want David de Gea to sign a new contract but knows it is completely up to the Spaniard as to whether he wants to commit his future to the club.

The 24-year-old has already become one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is only going to improve with every season that passes but reports of a return to his home town Madrid have grown stronger with every passing week during his time as a Man United player.

With Iker Casillas’ future under scrutiny in Madrid, De Gea has continuously been linked with a move back to the Spanish capital and when questioned on it, Louis van Gaal insisted the decision was out of Man United’s hands and with De Gea as to whether he wanted to stay at the club.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Arsenal game, Van Gaal said: “We have a list of goalkeepers who can replace him because we have to be organised also.

“We want him [De Gea] to stay, so hopefully he shall sign. I don’t know if we can offer him everything Real can, because I cannot speak for Real Madrid.

“We have three parties here and most important party is always the player. We want him to sign but he has to sign, and he has to want to stay here at Manchester United.

“I don’t know why he has not made the decision. I cannot say what he is saying to me.”

The ball is firmly in De Gea’s court now. As Van Gaal alludes to, there isn’t much which United can do from here on.

With a contract offer on the table and a top four spot secured, United have done everything they can to show De Gea that Old Trafford is the right place for him but if he decides he wants to go back to Madrid to live with his family and friends, it would be hard to begrudge him for making that decision.
