Manchester United have now mathematically secured a place in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League.
Thanks to Liverpool losing at home to Crystal Palace in Steven Gerrard’s last ever home game, Man United opened up an unassailable gap over fifth placed Liverpool.
Louis van Gaal will be delighted to have secured a spot back in Europe’s toughest competition because it was his primary objective with the club this season and makes sure that United’s absence from the competition was only a one year blip.
With two games left in United’s season, there is still a chance of finishing in third position but Arsenal need to lose at Old Trafford and drop points against either Sunderland or West Brom.
If United do finish in fourth position, then they will have to win a two-legged qualifier to earn a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stage. Van Gaal will be very keen to avoid that but regardless of whether that is achieved or not, it’s still fantastic that United have earned a place in the top four again after what happened last year under David Moyes.
