Luke Shaw left out of England U21s squad but Jesse Lingard included

Luke Shaw has been left out of England’s U21s squad for the 2015 European Championships this summer.

The 19-year-old will be very disappointed with the news but Louis van Gaal won’t be as he was keen for Shaw to get some rest this summer in order to help him recover for Manchester United next season.

Speaking at the squad announcement press conference, U21s boss Gareth Southgate said: “I’ve spoken to Louis van Gaal. Luke was very keen to come but medically he’s not going to be fit. It’s a shame.”

In more positive news, Jesse Lingard has been rewarded for his form with Derby this season and was called up to the U21s squad.

From United’s perspective, Shaw won’t be happy at not being included in the squad but it is great news for his chances next year. After the 2014 World Cup and a busy pre-season tour of USA, Shaw was exhausted and it no doubt contributed to his fitness issues this season.

After some much needed time off to recuperate, he should be able to recharge his batteries and if all goes well become United’s full-time left-back next year.
