Louis van Gaal has explained that Angel di Maria was substituted against Hull City after he felt a tweak in his hamstring.
The Argentinian winger made his first start since March but only lasted 22 minutes before he had to be taken off and cut a frustrated figure with his head down as he trotted back to the bench.
Speaking about the decision to come off, Van Gaal praised Di Maria’s smart decision to come off and remove himself from the situation.
“I believe he felt something in his hamstring and didn’t want to risk it,” Van Gaal told MUTV after the full-time whistle.
“It’s a smart move. I don’t think it’s very heavy.”
It’s safe to say that Di Maria’s first season as a Man United player didn’t go to plan.
After a blistering start to the year, Di Maria was unstoppable but a series of injuries and a burglary at his house saw him lose his confidence and form.
He has been unable to re-find his world class touch and if he is still a United player next season, fans will want to see much more from the club’s record signing.
