Louis van Gaal delighted with ‘multi-functional’ Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young

Louis van Gaal has sung the praises of both Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young for their abilities to play in more than one position for Manchester United.

Although undoubtedly his best position is as a striker, Rooney has played in a variety of midfield roles at various points this season whenever Van Gaal has asked him to fill in for injured players.

Young has been similarly versatile having played everywhere down the left flank and speaking about both players, Van Gaal hailed their multi-functional contributions to Man United over the course of the year.

“He’s a very good captain, I am very proud,” van Gaal about Rooney.

“I don’t have any disappointment this year with him. He’s great in the dressing room and an example on the training pitch.

“When we play a match he shall always fight until the end. He has played a lot of positions for me, without complaining.

“That’s also what I like in Ashley Young, who has also played a lot of positions at a high level. I like multi-functional players as they offer you more that the team needs than other players.

“I think I have made a very good decision [making Rooney captain] and you can also see in the way we have played. I think that we have fought 99% of our matches until the end. The team spirit was great.”

Young has surprised everybody this season by playing so well at both left-wing and left-back. After last year when he was so poor, it’s incredible to think how much progress he has made under Van Gaal and it’s a testament to him that he’s managed to do it.

As for Rooney, he might have played in the deeper roles when asked to do so but by far and away his best position is still as a striker. He might be able to do a job in midfield but he is shackled too much there and isn’t as effective.

Versatility is a character trait which Van Gaal loves and he has made that clear from the very start but hopefully by the start of next season, he’ll have the squad available to him which allows him to only use players in their best position so as to get the most out of them, including Rooney and Young.
