Manchester United target Nathaniel Clyne has hinted he will sign a new contract at Southampton, despite interest from the Reds.
Clyne has been subject to rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford since January with comments suggesting he wanted to play in the Champions League only sparking the rumours further.
However, his latest comments hint that instead of turning down a new contract at Southampton, where his current deal runs out next summer, he will sign it to show his commitment to the club.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Clyne hinted that he could ignore interest from United to stay at Southampton: “As long as you’re playing well for your club and you’re doing ever so well in the Premier League then, yeah, you’ll get a chance, regardless of whether you’re in a top team or not,”
He added: “But Southampton’s pushing up, so why can’t we be a top team?”
The Saints shocked everyone with a stunning season despite the departures of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Luke Shaw (to Man United). Ronald Koeman bought wisely and cheaply to ensure the Saints didn’t fall back down into the Championship, as many expected they would.
They finished the season off with a 2-0 loss to Manchester City but their last home game saw them humiliate Aston Villa 6-1, as Sadio Mane scored the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history.
Clyne’s decision has been waited for by the Saints for months now, with Koeman once suggesting that a decision had to be made within ten days.
Despite Koeman saying Clyne could leave this summer in April, Les Reed, Southampton’s Head of Football Development, said he was positive about Clyne’s future at St. Mary’s.
Clyne made his England debut this season and has continued that form throughout the year, earning him a place in many people’s team of the seasons.
United are in dire need of a new right-back with Rafael Da Silva constantly out with injury and Antonio Valencia only an interim, usually playing on the wing.
