It’s been a difficult season for the Belgian who has failed to have an impact in his limited appearances in a red shirt.
He’s made just eight starts in all competitions under Van Gaal and played his part in the U21s winning the in the U21s Barclays Premier League.
Speaking about how this season has gone, Januzaj admitted it has been a difficult year but is keen to impress next year.
“Of course I want to play in the first team and get more games,” Januzaj said.
“I’ve not had a lot of games this season.
“It’s been quite a difficult season but I still have many years to come. I’m still only 20 and that’s what people forget. I’m always working hard to try to prove myself.
“Sometimes you need to be patient but when you’ve got the chance you need to try and take it.
“I’m working hard first in training and it’s also important outside of training to work hard in the gym, which I’m doing at the minute to build myself and make myself stronger. I’m getting there.
“You’re not going to be strong in one month. You need a long time before you gain that natural strength.”
Last year he broke into the side at the age of 19 and scored twice on his full debut to save Man United from a shock loss to Sunderland. That season, he played 27 times in the league, scoring four times and assisting another three.
However, that form hasn’t been replicated this year with the 20-year-old failing to play a part in any of United’s goals this season.
He had a brief spell in the first team during the busy Christmas period but throughout the season has been a substitute, 61.1% of his appearances in the league coming from the bench.
While at times Januzaj has been forgettable this season, every United fan knows how good he could and can be, with last season just one demonstration of that.
He was right in saying people forget how young he still is and despite rumours linking him with a loan move away from Old Trafford, he is determined to compete for a place in the United starting XI against Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria, Ashley Young and new signing Memphis Depay.
