David de Gea‘s future is what Manchester United fans are most concerned about this summer and the latest from Spain suggests his move to Real Madrid has already been agreed.
Reports have boldly said De Gea will be the first signing of Real Madrid by this summer and that Rafael Benitez will be their new manager.
Joseba Larranaga, a journalist on Spanish radio station COPE, insisted De Gea had already reached an agreement with Madrid.
Speaking on COPE Radio about Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, Larranaga said: “Benitez has rejected two offers. One of Naples itself and one of West Ham.
“The first signing with Benitez will be be De Gea. The goalkeeper has reached an agreement with Real Madrid, although it is the most difficult, that is Manchester United. It is hoped to be an end to the operation.”
What should we take of these reports?
Well, it certainly marks a big swing from Larranaga as only nine days ago he insisted Man United had told Madrid that De Gea was not for sale.
Given that De Gea nor Louis van Gaal has given any update on his future, you have to presume Larranaga is making these claims off the back of his own information, if he has any.
Second of all, how could De Gea reach an agreement with Madrid before United? Unless, of course, he is allowed to negotiate with other clubs as he is coming into his last year of his contract.
As for the Benitez claims, we couldn’t care less about them. That being said, surely the thought of moving to Madrid to potentially play under Benitez instead of Carlo Ancelotti is somewhat less appealing for any player thinking of joining them this summer.
Keeping De Gea at Man United is more important than making any new signings but the general feeling is that it will be very difficult to do if Madrid come calling which, if Larranaga’s claims are to be taken as the truth, they have already done that.
