The Spanish goalkeeper was in outstanding form and deservedly named Manchester United’s Player and Fans’ Player of the Season at the end of year awards for the second successive year.
He also earned a spot in the Premier League Team of the Year and Scholes has followed suit by choosing De Gea in his own best XI from the 2014/15 Premier League season.
Explaining his choice, Scholes said: “The outstanding ‘keeper in the league. He has saved United so many points along the way. An easy choice to make.”
From a personal achievement perspective, De Gea won almost everything he could have this year but wasn’t able to help United win any silverware, despite his best efforts which were worth lots of points in themselves.
United fans are desperate for De Gea to stay at the club past this summer but have mentally conceded to the fact that a move back to Madrid has plenty of attraction for him given it is where his family, girlfriend and boyhood memories lie.
