Marco van Basten has hailed the ‘special’ talent of Memphis Depay and believes he is going to be a great player for Manchester United.
The current assistant manager of AZ Alkmaar spoke highly of the way Depay performed for PSV Eindhoven during their title winning 2014/15 season.
Depay was superb for Ajax last season as he netted 22 goals and recorded five assists on route to winning the Eredivisie by a massive 17 point margin.
When asked whether anybody in the Eredivisie came close to Depay in terms of talent, Van Basten responded decisively: “No. He’s a special talent. He’s better than the rest.
“He’s a very good player. He’s a young star who is strong and has his own ideas, which I think is a good thing for a player.
“He’s also a guy who still wants to learn and he’s in good hands with Louis van Gaal who has already worked with him at the World Cup.
“He now has to demonstrate that he can also play well in England. He will show that to you. I don’t know whether it will be quick and come in the first year but he has the skills to succeed in England.”
A talismanic figure throughout the campaign, the Dutchman received high levels of interest from top clubs across Europe. When an offer from Man United came in, he couldn’t refuse the opportunity to work with Van Gaal, who he worked with during the 2014 World Cup.
Receiving such immense praise from Van Basten, a legend of the game, is testament to the way Depay has dominated Dutch football in the past year.
The superlatives being thrown in Depay’s direction bodes well for his future at United. Those who have watched him closely, like Van Basten, have tipped the winger to have a blistering impact on the Premier League.
