Man United have traditionally played through the wings over the years but this term has seen van Gaal employ a much more conservative style of play.
Memphis will bring pace and power to United’s left hand side and the team may be more willing to play down the flanks as a result.
Juan Mata has enjoyed a fine season on the opposite side but van Gaal may be hoping that Angel di Maria regains his form before making himself a mainstay on the right.
At his very best, the Argentine can be frightening and the combination of him and Memphis should be a thrilling one to watch if it clicks.
Of course, the likes of Mata and Ashley Young will have their own say on the matter but, on paper, Memphis and a rejuvenated Di Maria should be able to make United a force once again.
