The 25-year-old French midfielder was heavily linked with a move away from Southampton last summer but the South coast club refused to let him leave following an exodus of their players.
However, now that Southampton have missed out on Champions League football, Schneiderlin does look set to move as he is very keen to play in the competition.
On paper, Schneiderlin is the perfect no.6 signing which Louis van Gaal is looking for.
Strong, physical, intelligent and Premier League proven, he’d step into the Michael Carrick role with ease. He wouldn’t need any time to adapt to the rigours of English football and is an excellent footballer already at 25.
Of course, this could simply be a leak from Schneiderlin’s agent to force other interested clubs, notably Arsenal, into gear and step up their pursuit of the Frenchman. So, we won’t get too excited just yet.
The arrival of Schneiderlin would surely mean any move for Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan is unlikely to materialise as well.
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has also admitted the club are looking at Jordy Clasie as a potential replacement for Schneiderlin.
It’s an interesting development to see Schneiderlin once again linked with Man United and one which fans won’t be surprised to see given how quality he has been in the last two years with Southampton.
