Manchester City have stepped in and approached Valenciennes defender Dayot Upamecano with a salary offer according to reports in France.
Get French Football News are saying City have submitted an offer for Upamecano and are willing to pay Valenciennes a higher fee than Manchester United.
The 17-year-old has been on Man United’s radar since January but thanks to a long and drawn out set of transfer negotiations, City have been able to step in to throw a potential spanner in the works.
From United’s perspective, this whole deal with Upamecano is a bit of a mess now. Here is a timeline of what has happened and been reported:
2 February – Man United have signed Dayot Upamecano
As you can see, it’s been a painful set of negotiations up until this point and City’s involvement won’t make it any easier.
United’s failure to secure a clean and painless transfer have let City come into the equation which complicates things as they’ll more than likely be willing to offer more money to both Valenciennes and Upamecano than United.
Given the amount of work that has gone into this deal, United must be keen to sign Upamecano and City have jumped on the opportunity to steal a march on their rivals.
If United do fail to sign Upamecano after all of this protracted saga and he moves to City, it will be somewhat embarrassing for the club.
