The majority of Manchester United fans have come to accept that David de Gea will leave the club for Real Madrid sooner rather than later.
If the Spaniard really wanted to stay at Old Trafford, he would have publicly quashed the rumours months ago.
Instead, De Gea’s continued silence on the matter is telling and reports on Tuesday suggested Man United have conceded defeat in their attempts to keep him. As much as United fans would love for the 24-year-old to stay, it looks increasingly likely that he will join his girlfriend and family in Madrid.
De Gea has received widespread adulation from supporters this term following a string of superb performances but we asked our Twitter followers if their opinion of the player would change if he left United:
@PeoplesPerson_ yeah, the guy should show some loyalty to the club that stood by him when he was a bit of a laughing stock !

@PeoplesPerson_ I'll probably dislike him a bit, but that's because I'm bitter like that. He's not actually doing anything wrong.

@PeoplesPerson_ Well as a United fan I'll wish him good luck for his future but at the same time grow a heavy grudge against him

@PeoplesPerson_ He deserves the move but can’t help feel a little bitter that he’s prob going to leave for a relatively low fee

@PeoplesPerson_ its his life, he's done well for us all the best to him if he does go, gutted but time heals all wounds

@PeoplesPerson_ It's sad to see since we've watched him grow, but I can't imagine being as upset as Atletico Madrid fans if he joined Real.

@PeoplesPerson_ will I still respect him? Yes. Will I love & support him? Not a chance. I only care about my football club. Not individuals.

De Gea has been a brilliant player for United and he will always have the respect of supporters at Old Trafford.
However, no player is bigger than the club. United have always moved on following big departures and they will do the same with him.
Attention will turn to who can replace De Gea, with Hugo Lloris and Bernd Leno both linked with moves to the club. Victor Valdes will also be hoping to take up a more prominent role for Louis van Gaal’s side.
