Sam Johnstone: Play-off win with Preston North End was the proudest moment of my career

Sam Johnstone has revealed his Wembley play-off final win with Preston North End ranks as his proudest achievement as a footballer to date.

Johnstone, on loan at Preston from Manchester United, helped the Lilywhites secure promotion to the Championship with a 4-0 win over Swindon Town.

The victory capped off an impressive campaign for the goalkeeper after he joined Preston in the winter transfer window.

Johnstone admitted he will never forget the day and ranked the win as the best moment of his career so far.

Speaking about the result, Johnstone said: “This promotion is probably top of my career achievements to date.

“Playing at Wembley is one memory, but winning there and getting promoted is another – putting the two together has got to be top.

“I have played at different England age groups and stuff but this is really the one that has topped it off.

“It was a great experience to be in the Play-Offs; it’s a memory that you will never forget.”

It is always good to see young players at Man United do well on loan and fans will be particularly pleased to see Johnstone’s success.

The 22-year-old is unlikely to ever break into Louis van Gaal’s squad ahead of David de Gea and Victor Valdes but there is no doubt that he has the talent to make an impact elsewhere.
