Barcelona sign Sevilla’s Aleix Vidal

by Sam Peoples

Barcelona have completed the signing of Sevilla defender Aleix Vidal on a five-year contract despite the fact they are currently serving a transfer ban.

The 25-year-old full-back has joined Barcelona for £16m but he will be unable to officially register for the club until the ban expires in January.

Vidal enjoyed an excellent season with Europa League winners Sevilla and netted a total of four goals in 47 appearances.

Vidal is already being touted as a replacement for Dani Alves, who is set to leave Barcelona this summer. In a Vidal, who expects to make his Spain debut this week, insisted there in no pressure on him.

Speaking about the transfer, Vidal said: “Replacing Alves is not a pressure, is a challenge. I knew Barça was interested, I’m happy the deal was closed quickly. I’ve been playing at many teams, I hope this is the last one.

“I’m living a dream. It has been tough to get here. Everything has been going fast, I’m enjoying it. I always try to give everything.”

For Manchester United fans, this is positive news. Alves has been unsettled at Barcelona for quite some time and the signing of Vidal may be the first step in the Brazilian making a move to Old Trafford.

Man United may well benefit from the experience of Alves but, at 32 years of age, there is a question mark over whether or not he would be a good signing in the long-term. In any case, a number of European clubs are said to be chasing Alves including AC Milan.
