Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw believes latest summer signing Memphis Depay can become one of the best but has warned fans to be patient with him.
Fellow Dutchman Van Der Gouw had almost 40 appearances at Old Trafford over a six year period and believes the attitude and work ethic of the £25m signing will help him succeed in England.
However, he understands the Premier League is a vastly different environment and believes he will need time to fully adapt to England.
“He will handle moving to United, but he will find it different,” he said.
“You could have negative things written about you in Holland but it wouldn’t be on the scale that he’ll find in England both with what you do on the pitch and off it.
“If that negativity kicks in then it is a case of how well you cope with it all. Can you keep your focus? How strong are you? Those are the big questions. I get the impression he is the kind of player and character who will deal with it.
“He is going to need time though. It is a big thing moving from your home country to England. Few players can go straight in and settle. Not everyone is prepared to give you time but that is another aspect you have to work through and it will make you better.”
In a competitive United environment, time won’t always be on the side of Depay. Talents such as Angel di Maria, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and youngster Adnan Januzaj will all be competing for regular wide spots next season.
That being said, Louis van Gaal is well aware of Depay’s talents and has a fantastic track record of bringing through some of the world’s best youngsters and helping them fulfill their potential.
Depay looks to have the determination needed to be a success which is half the battle for a youngster and fans are bursting with excitement to see what he can do at Old Trafford next season.
