Manchester United had long been linked with a move for Dani Alves before he signed a new contract at Barcelona this week.
Not for the first time, it appears a player, or at least his agent, used Man United in order to get a better deal with his club.
Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has been guilty of this in the past as has team-mate Dante. There’s nothing better than using United to scare their current club into giving into their demands, or at least that’s the way it looks.
The frustration amongst United fans was clear after they built themselves up to a potential transfer of Alves only to be let down.
Dani Alves is the master of using other clubs to get a better deal.

Dani Alves stays at Barcelona. Cue gushing statement featuring the sentence "I never wanted to leave", nailed on.

Dani Alves joins a rather illustrious list of footballers who have used United's interest to earn a better contract at their clubs.

I hope De Gea has seen what Dani Alves has done after that long.

Have we been used again for a player to get a better deal? Or did Dani Alves change his mind after winning the treble? #MUFC

Dani Alves signs 2 year contract with Barcelona? What the f was the whole fuss about then?

Dani Alves should donate 10% of his new contract to a #mufc charity after using the club to get a new Barca deal.

To be fair to Alves, his agent also made comments to the media suggesting that he was in talks with AC Milan the day before he committed to Barcelona.
Unfortunately, that is just how the football world works. The episode serves as another reminder that fans shouldn’t get excited about a potential signing until he signs on the dotted line.
Attention will turn to who United will be looking at instead, with Nathaniel Clyne, Matteo Darmian and Dani Carvajal all linked with moves to Old Trafford.
