The midfielder scored two goals against France in a friendly this week so would have gone into the Wales game in superb form but a groin injury in training means he will now have to watch from the sidelines.
It’s a cruel blow for Fellaini given how strong his season has been and Belgium boss Marc Wilmots is disappointed the ‘unique’ midfielder won’t be able to play.
Speaking about Fellaini, he said: “There’s only one Marouane Fellaini on this planet. He’s unique. If I ask him to run through a wall, then he will do it. But if he has a muscle tear, it makes no sense to play him on Friday. We have enough alternatives.”
Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembele is being discussed as the potential replacement for Belgium this Friday.
Whilst the news is concerning for Belgium fans, the injury scare is not yet being seen as serious enough to hamper the start of Fellaini’s United campaign in August.
Hopefully the injury is nothing too serious and he’ll be back in action sooner rather than later.
