Rafael da Silva’s future as a Manchester United player looks extremely bleak.
The Brazilian found himself out of favour all last season under Louis van Gaal and was unable to break through into the first-team on a regular basis.
Injuries made it very difficult for him to do that but even when he was available for selection, Van Gaal overlooked him and continued to play the disciplined, albeit one dimensional, Antonio Valencia.
So, by all accounts it looks like Rafael will be sold this summer as part of Van Gaal’s next round of changes. Yet, Rafael is still wearing the club colours out in Brazil during the off season knowing full well that he may never wear the club’s shirt again:
It’s a small gesture but one that shows Rafael has no desire to leave United and would stay if it was his choice.
Fans love Rafael with genuine affection. He gets the club and always has done, that has never changed, and the fact he is wearing the club’s training top still is a testament to how the affection works both ways with him.
It’ll be a sad time if Rafael does leave this summer because, just like Patrice Evra, his passion for the club goes deeper than most and that feeling is mutual.
