Lionel Messi has praised Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney as a player and believes he could excel in La Liga if given the opportunity.
Rooney has been the heartbeat of Man United for over ten years now and has amassed 170 goals since joining the club. He has also collected 104 caps for England along with 47 goals during that time.
There was speculation at the time of David Moyes’ appointment as United manager that the two would not be able to co-exist and talk of transfers to Spain cropped up across several media outlets. None of them ever materialised but Messi believes Rooney could do well in Spain.
Lionel Messi was asked by reporters what Premier League player could thrive in La Liga ahead of the Copa America in Chile.
“If you look at the technical ability of a player like Wayne Rooney, he is as good as any player in Europe,” Messi commented.
“Rooney has exceptional quality. Not just great technical ability, but also works very hard for his team. I’m sure Manchester United will never want to let him leave, though.”
Rooney turns 30 in October and may well be past his prime but he still has a lot to offer United as they try to re-establish themselves as a force in the Champions League after a down period following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Cristiano Ronaldo made the move to Spain from Manchester and has scored 225 times in 200 appearances for Real Madrid. There is no question that Rooney is good but that is other-worldly. Rooney will likely finish his career at United with plenty more time to win more trophies with the club.
