Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to sign Barnet midfielder Wesley Fonguck, according to The Mirror.
Aston Villa, Southampton and Man United are all interested in the 17-year-old who has also impressed England U20 coaches while they trained at Barnet.
The midfielder, who is a second year scholar at Barnet, has caught United’s eye and may well become the latest recruit to the burgeoning academy.
Described as a midfielder who can both dictate the tempo of the game and start attacks from deep, Fonguck sounds very much like a sweeper-type player who can marshal the defence and protect the back four.
Already 6’1” at just 17, Fonguck is already becoming a midfield presence and that’s something that gives him a real advantage at that level because youngsters are not usually that well developed at that age.
It is unclear how much United would need to spend to secure his services but the Mirror have reported that the Reds have made an enquiry into signing the highly-rated midfielder.
United are staying very active in the transfer market when it comes to offering trials to youngsters for the academy or bringing in players on a contract, and it’s good to see Louis van Gaal putting so much focus on that.
