Former Croatian international Milan Rapaic believes Mario Mandzukic is ‘very close’ to joining Manchester United this summer.
The 29-year-old has become one of a number of strikers linked with a move to Man United as Louis van Gaal is likely to be actively seeking a new striker after United’s limp season in front of goal last year, not to mention the fact Radamel Falcao has already left.
Mandzukic wouldn’t be the first name on everybody’s list but fellow Croatian Rapaic believes he would be the perfect player for any team around Europe.
Speaking about Mandzukic, Rapaic said: “He’s perfect for any team in any European league…it appears to me that he’s very close to Manchester United.”
With 12 goals in 24 appearances for Atletico Madrid last season, it wasn’t a terrible campaign for Mandzukic but did fall some way short of the 18 goals in 21 appearances he scored for Bayern Munich in the previous season.
On paper, Karim Benzema is a far more suited fit for United’s needs in terms of a striker who is comfortable getting involved in the build-up play as well as scoring, but Mandzukic would certainly still strengthen United’s current options.
