Fabinho, who joined Monaco from Real Madrid Castilla in 2013, enjoyed a fine campaign for the French side last term.
Van Gaal is looking for an upgrade on Antonio Valencia ahead of next season and he was previously keen on Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne. However, their interest in the Englishman has since cooled.
Barcelona’s Dani Alves was another option for Man United but he signed a new contract at Barcelona earlier this month.
United will face competition from Liverpool for Fabinho’s signature if they decide to go for the player.
Valencia simply isn’t good enough to play for United week in, week out and van Gaal doesn’t seem to be convinced by Rafael, so Fabinho would be a good addition on the right flank should he come in.
However, Clyne offers proven Premier League experience. A foreign player coming to England would need time to get adjusted, whereas Clyne could hit the ground running. It remains to be seen who exactly van Gaal will go for and it is unlikely we’ve heard the last of the speculation.
