Nicolas Otamendi helped Argentina secure a 1-0 victory over Uruguay today in their latest Copa America match, and showcased some evidence as to why he is so highly rated.
The 27-year-old was fearless in the tackle and brave in the jump when it came to winning the ball back for Argentina. That sort of commitment is what United desperately need at the heart of defence.
It wasn’t a spectacular performance from Otamendi but then again that is not what you should ever expect from him.
He’s a no nonsense, old school style defender whose prerogative is to clean up and protect his goalkeeper. Given that Argentina won 1-0, you could say he played out his job to perfection.
United fans were certainly happy to see him play and take control of Uruguay’s attacks:

If for no other reason, United have got sign Otamendi for his beard. It's so well groomed that it looks like suede. pic.twitter.com/PmXjsMf2L3

The excitement is building around Otamendi now that plenty of United fans have seen him play in the Copa America with Argentina and seen how powerful he is.
Otamendi really does look like the sort of player who could come in, take United’s defence by the scruff of the neck and toughen it up, so hopefully a transfer does get pushed through with Valencia this summer.
