The 22-year old French international has struggled to break into Madrid’s first-team in recent years thanks to Sergio Ramos and Pepe who have both kept him out of the line-up.
However, this looks set to change with new boss Rafa Benitez keen to hand the central-defender a starting role at his new club, something that may see current first-choice Pepe dropped to the bench.
Varane was previously rumoured to be unhappy in Madrid due to a lack of playing time but becoming a first-team regular would certainly resolve that issue.
The report from Marca may well simply be a reaction to reports linking Varane with a move to Old Trafford but regardless of that, it is certainly about time the Frenchman became a first-team regular wherever he plays.
At 22, Varane is mature beyond his years and will more than likely grow to become one of the world’s best centre-backs but if Madrid are prepared to make him one of their main men, it’s unlikely Van Gaal would be able to tempt him to United.
This summer, United fans will have to place their trust in Ed Woodward to find a partner for Chris Smalling next season.
The club has already been linked to both Nicolas Otamendi and Mats Hummels but with Varane looking unlikely and Miranda close to sealing a move to Inter Milan, options are quickly diminishing in what is a fast moving transfer market.
