Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi has dropped a big hint that his future lies away from the Spanish club.
Otamendi is currently in Chile for the Copa America as part of the Argentina squad and is thought to be one of Louis van Gaal’s top targets to fill the centre-back void this summer.
The Argentinian was very impressive for Valencia last season and his performances earned him a place in the 2014/15 La Liga team of the year.
At present, Otamendi’s focus remains on the Copa America but he has refused to commit to Valencia, opening the door for a summer exit.
Speaking about his current situation, he said: “The truth is that I am enjoying being with the national team, at the Copa America, where there is a lot of responsibility to wear the jersey. I spoke at the time with my agent, and Valencia know very well what I want.
“Every word my agent says is obviously with my authorisation, with whoever he needs to speak with. At the moment, as I said, my head is fully with the national team, to be able to perform at the maximum when I get to play, and to enjoy this unique moment.
“I had a chat with the president [Salvo] and my agent, and he knows very well what I want. But now I have told my agent that my head is here [in Chile] and I will leave it in his hands to do what he must do.”
Otamendi has re-affirmed his agent’s previous words that he wants to leave Valencia, which certainly puts him a step closer to joining Man United.
The Argentinian also downplayed stories about a picture he tweeted with Angel di Maria being evidence of an impending move to Old Trafford.
“Well, it’s not such a big deal,” he added.
“I am enjoying being with Di Maria, Rojo, [Carlos] Tevez, [Lionel] Messi and many other big players here.”
It is no secret that Louis van Gaal has been scouting Europe for a new central defender and the Buenos-Aires born centre-back would prove a strong addition if United are serious about challenging on all fronts next season.
However, Valencia are insistent that his release-clause is met and it remains to be seen as to whether Ed Woodward is willing to match that price.
What is clear is that Otamendi is keen for a summer transfer, otherwise he would have already committed himself to Valencia.
