Borussia Dortmund say Ilkay Gundogan could stay at the club

by Sid Choudhary

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan could still stay at the club says general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke.

The 24-year-old seemed to have joined Manchester United in April when Sky Germany reported that a deal had been agreed and although that was followed up, there has been no movement as of yet.

Barcelona have also been linked with Gundogan and certain reports claimed he had undergone a medical at the European champions request.

Further reports said Barcelona and Bayern Munich had pulled out due to his wage demands. Now, in what could be a massive U-turn, Dortmund’s Watzke claims the club are still in negotiations with Gundogan.

“Maybe there is still a chance that he has a rethink,” Watzke said.

“We are in talks and Ilkay is a decent lad.”

Many Man United fans see Gundogan as the perfect midfielder to add to the squad. Having recovered successfully from a back injury, the German has performed admirably in a Dortmund team that struggled last season. His good performances earned him a recall to the German national team later on in the year.

While months ago it seemed that United had got their man, Watzke’s comments mark a potential U-turn which might now see Gundogan stay at the German club.

If he does stay, Gundogan will have to lower his wage demands and it seems that has been the big stumbling block all along, for both Dortmund and other interested clubs.
