When it comes to talented youngsters, there are a few key elements which determine their career paths.
It’s one thing to have talent like Ravel Morrison but without the application or mental approach, that talent can go to waste as has been seen with the ex-United star who was once hailed as the best academy product since Paul Scholes.
While there are plenty of cases where talent falls by the wayside, United’s new signing Memphis Depay has one key instinct which will really help him make the most of what he has got – an unwavering work ethic.
Speaking to ManUtd.com, Dutch journalist Thijs Slegers explained how Depay’s hard work at PSV has actually set a precedent which all youngsters will now aspire to achieve.
He said: “He has been working hard in the gym since being in the youth department of PSV and this summer the club are going to build a new gym for the youth in Eindhoven. One of the things they have planned is to have Memphis’ personal best next to each machine, because he has set a lot of records. This is to show exactly what they want from the young players and what is the benchmark. They’ve made Memphis the standard to aim for.”
When Eric Cantona was at his peak as a United player, he would still stay behind at training and practice on his own when everybody else had gone home. David Beckham did the same with his free-kicks and Cristiano Ronaldo built a career on going the extra mile.
When it comes to being the best, you have to go above and beyond and Depay knows this.
Depay will have the perfect platform at United and fans are extremely excited to see what he can do at Old Trafford.
One positive as well – it doesn’t look like fans will be getting annoyed with Memphis for diving on the pitch, because he is absolutely awful!
