De Gea is widely expected to depart United in the summer for Real Madrid in order to return to his home town, even though United are desperate for him to sign a new deal.
Already one of the world’s best goalkeepers at the age of 24, De Gea is getting better every season and Mata is keen for him to still call Old Trafford home next year.
“Lots of people ask me about him,” he said.
“He’s a friend and I want him to be happy.”
“He’s currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world. From a selfish point of view, I would want to have him in my team.”
It was reported yesterday that De Gea had told his United team-mates that he wanted to leave, with the Spanish giants expected to table an opening £13m offer for United’s No.1.
United have been linked with moves for several of Real’s big-name stars as part of a deal to take De Gea to the Bernabeu, including Gareth Bale (of whom Dwight Yorke is a huge fan).
With De Gea remaining silent and him no closer to signing a new deal with United, it seems an inevitability that he will leave this summer but up until the point he is pictured holding a Madrid shirt, fans and players alike will continue to hope he stays.
