Manchester United have been warned that they may be being ‘used’ by Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.
Louis van Gaal is on the lookout for a new central defender and Man United have been linked with Ramos, who is said to be unhappy in Spain.
However, in an interview with talkSPORT, London Evening Standard reporter Simon Johnson poured cold water on the rumours by saying that the 29-year-old may be using United to receive a better contract from Madrid.
Speaking about the situation, Johnson said: “I would say a word of warning. Sergio Ramos, I think, on an annual basis, gets linked with a move to the Premier League and he always ends up staying.
“The fact he has got two years left on his contract and the phrase under-appreciated has come out means I’d take it with a pinch of salt.
“While Manchester United are clearly looking for a centre-half I wouldn’t be surprised if they were just being used so he can get another deal at the Bernabeu.”
Fans won’t be surprised by the comments after players such as Bayern Munich’s Dante and Barcelona’s Dani Alves both used United in the past in order to negotiate better contracts with their respective clubs.
However, there is always that hope that the move will come off as Ramos is undoubtedly one of the best central defenders in the world. In any case, it is hard to see Ramos leaving the country and club where he has spent a hugely successful ten years.
