New Bayern Munich signing Joshua Kimmich has told Bastian Schweinsteiger that he is targeting his place in the starting XI.
20-year-old midfielder Kimmich signed for Bayern from 2.Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in January and has spoke of his intention to usurp Schweinsteiger’s holding midfield role for the German champions.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola is keen to increase competition for places in his side and sees the youngster as the ideal understudy to Schweinsteiger.
However, Kimmich has his heart set on a starting role for Bayern and is fully prepared to upset the veteran in order to get it.
Speaking about next season, Kimmich said: “I would not go to Bayern if I did not see a chance to play.
“Of course Schweini is a role model to me, but from next season on we’ll be competitors.”
Manchester United fans will be interested to hear Kimmich’s comments as they may serve to intensify rumours linking Schweinsteiger with a transfer to Old Trafford.
The German World Cup winner has recently been linked with a £7.5m switch to Man United and with Kimmich seemingly intent on cementing a regular first-team spot for Bayern, Schweinsteiger may see this as the perfect time to start a new challenge and make the move to Manchester.
