Liverpool are now considered favourites to sign Hoffenheim midfielder Roberto Firmino.
Globo Esporte in Brazil say Liverpool have now become favourites to sign Firmino ahead of Manchester United and City, both of whom were credited with an interest in him.
They go on to say Hoffenheim will not let Firmino go for a penny less than £25,000,000.
At one stage, reports suggested Firmino was set to join United in a cut price €18m deal and they now look wide of the mark, with Liverpool emerging as the top contender in the Premier League.
Following confirmation from Firmino’s agent that he will be moving to the Premier League, it looked certain that the 23-year-old would join a club in England.
Now, Liverpool are the frontrunners in a pursuit for him and it’s a move which makes a lot more sense than United.
The expected sale of Raheem Sterling would leave a big hole that Firmino could fill and he’d probably enjoy linking up with compatriot Coutinho as well.
At United, Firmino would come in and be behind the likes of Juan Mata in the pecking order, something he wouldn’t get at Anfield with Sterling out of the way.
Louis van Gaal‘s focus this year is on defensive minded midfielders. Although Firmino clearly has bags of talent, he is not what United are currently in need of.
