Ryan Giggs hopes Memphis Depay can emulate David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United

Ryan Giggs has tipped Memphis Depay to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham and become the next free-kick specialist at Manchester United.

Memphis scored seven of his 22 Eredivisie goals for PSV Eindhoven last season from free-kicks, which helped to fire the Dutch outfit to their 22nd league title.

The 21-year-old, who has worked under Louis van Gaal before with the Dutch national team, joined Man United in a big money deal in May.

Ryan Giggs believes that Memphis can give United a cutting edge over their opponents when it comes to dead ball situations.

“One thing we probably have lacked since Cristiano – and Becks (David Beckham) before him – is free kicks, and it looks like Depay has a great track record from free kicks as well,” he said.

“Over a season, if you can score more from free-kicks and corners it adds up and makes a real difference in winning games. So, no pressure… but hopefully he’ll score 10 free kicks every year!”

Giggs also believes that Memphis has chosen the best place to develop his career due to the patience from United fans with young players.

The Welshman added: “Old Trafford is the right stage for a player like him, because if you try things that don’t come off the fans will stay behind you. You’re at a club where they want you to do things off the cuff, to entertain them.”

Most United fans can’t wait to see Memphis in a red shirt following his outstanding performances for PSV last season.

However, Memphis will have to impress his teammates in training in order to be awarded the title of first-choice free-kick taker. Players such as Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney will also be eager to stake their claim as United’s dead ball specialist, so Memphis may have to wait his turn.
