Monaco right-back Fabinho is close to signing for Manchester City, according to French publication L’Equipe.
Manchester United had been strongly linked with a €14m move for the player but City appear to have beaten them to the punch.
Fabinho spent the past two seasons on loan at Monaco and was part of Brazil’s squad for the Copa America in Chile.
The 21-year-old signed for Monaco permanently in May but it looks like the French club are already trying to move him on.
Louis van Gaal reportedly moved his attention to the 21-year-old after Dani Alves unexpectedly signed a new contract at Barcelona earlier this month.
The Brazilian youngster won the most tackles in Monaco’s squad last season and his tackle success rate was 10% higher than Phil Jones‘ last term, so he’s got some bite in him.
Van Gaal is preparing to spend a lot of money on his defence this summer and Fabinho operates in a right-back position where United need to strengthen.
It would be a bitter blow to lose him to another club, particularly City. A club of United’s stature cannot afford to have Antonio Valencia regularly starting in their team if they are to be successful and they will need to look elsewhere if they miss out on Fabinho.
