Los Blancos are still in negotiations to bring the 24-year-old to the Santiago Bernabéu but talks have been complicated by Man United’s interest in Sergio Ramos, who is reportedly unhappy with life in Madrid.
Madrid operatives are keen to force through a deal for de Gea before as soon as possible, so that the Spaniard does not have to rejoin his Man United teammates for pre-season training at the start of next week.
However, any deal is thought to be far from being agreed, with the United hierarchy reportedly disappointed by Madrid’s opening bid of £13m for de Gea.
United fans will be hoping that no deal for De Gea is completed before the start of next week, as a re-union with his team-mates and manager, Louis van Gaal, might increase the chances of him staying in Manchester for another season.
Supporters are clinging to every bit of hope they can find with regards to De Gea remaining at Old Trafford to continue his footballing career, regardless of how likely his move to Madrid seems.
One saving grace is that United are not letting De Gea go easily. If Madrid want him this summer, they’ll have to pay the right price. Otherwise, he’ll remain at United and leave on a free next year.
