Besiktas board member Yalcin Kaya Yilmaz has confirmed that the club will attempt to make a move for Manchester United striker Robin van Persie this summer.
Van Persie has been the subject of transfer speculation recently having also been closely linked with the likes of Juventus and Galatasaray over the past few weeks.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement was said to hit the Dutch striker hard and he has reportedly become unhappy at Old Trafford.
Yilmaz confirmed Besiktas will attempt to secure van Persie’s signature if he expresses a willingness to leave Man United.
“If the conditions are right and if he [van Persie] also wants to come we are willing to make an offer even if it would push us to the limit financially,” he said.
“He would really get the crowd going at the Arena and sales from season tickets and merchandise alone would be able to make back our investment.”
Van Persie has given United fans a number of memorable moments over the years and his exit would come as a blow. His free-kick against Manchester City in 2012, or the magnificent volley to win the Premier League title against Aston Villa that same season.
The 31-year-old has won plenty of battles on the football pitch against world-class defenders and goalkeepers but it is clear that his best years are now behind him.
