Rio Ferdinand backs Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin pursuit

by Robbie Dunne

Rio Ferdinand has backed Manchester United’s pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin and believes that the midfielder will add something to the team.

Schneiderlin has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford and the midfielder has said he is ready for a move to a Champions League club.

The midfielder attracted quite a lot of attention last summer but the speculation never led to anything because Southampton refused to let him go.

However, following another very successful season for the French international, he looks to be on his way out of Southampton and Ferdinand backed him to bring a lot to United if he joined.

“He’s a player who’s going to add something to Manchester United,” he said.

“A bit of steel, can pass the ball, can play the ball through the lines of midfield and get the ball from back to front.

“He’s a good player and a good addition to the squad, especially if someone like [Michael] Carrick, who’s so influential for Man United, gets injured. This guy can step in and help buffer that. He’s a very good player.”

Schneiderlin has all the tools to make it in a Louis van Gaal side and with Michael Carrick showing signs of decline in recent years, which has led to several injuries and a lot of time on the sidelines, the move for him really does make sense.

It is interesting to see how Van Gaal will line up next year with the Dutchman being a fan of a 4-3-3 system and it’s a system which Schneiderlin could conceivably slot right into

Schneiderlin is more combative than Carrick and offers more defensive cover than the soon to be 34-year-old stalwart but the two could conceivably co-exist in United’s midfield.
